Final Post

I took this class with an open mind because I know that master level classes involve more interaction from students. During undergrad, the teacher taught and we listened. In this course, the teacher taught our class and then challenged the class with questions. The best part was that the class was able to talk about different issues and the atmosphere was always very good even if we didn’t always agree. There were topics that some may have found uncomfortable but our class handled those questions and we sat and talked about them. The biggest thing in this class that opened my eyes was the Code of Ethics. I can say I never even thought about the Code of Ethics until Dr. Nancy brought it up. As a coach, it makes your job easier because going by the NCAA guidelines help you a lot but the Code of Ethics almost cleans up anything the NCAA guidelines may have overlooked. I also enjoyed the talk on the new law in Indiana. I didn’t know how that talk would go but I’m glad to have spoken with the class about that law. Last, but not least, I think the blogs were the best part of the course. I really enjoyed reading and commenting on those.

  1. Vince- I agree that it was great to hear from so many different opinions and backgrounds throughout the semester. It made this class enjoyable and rewarding. I also thought that our class handled the “difficult” topics well throughout the semester. I believe that it is important for coaches to follow the NCAA guidelines and Code of Ethics, but being in the coaching profession there are so issues that come up that aren’t expected. Each day can offer a new issue to a coach of young men or women. Some of these issues may not be covered by the NCAA guidelines or Code of Ethics. In these instances it is important for the coach to look at every angle of the issues before deciding what to do. I also really enjoyed the blogs and comments. I was never one to share my opinions with others before but this class has opened me up to it.

  2. I agree with both Vince and Ben, the interactive nature of this course made it enjoyable. It was one that I like looked forward too in a way because the topics were interesting. Everyone had an equal voice in the class that was respected by everyone even if disagreed with. What I found most interesting about the class was as Ben said, the difficult topics such as the Fraternity in Oklahoma topic. Racism is always a sensitive topic and in this particular case it was interesting to find that those of us that had an ethnic background of the protected group were willing to forgive and give another chance while others were more furious and had less tolerance. What I learned from this class is the importance of ethics and how it applies in everything we do, every issue that occurs and is sometimes over looked. This course shined a light on the elements of which the code of ethics my future organization may contain. As a coach, I realize how useful it can be as Mr. Robinson mentioned that it can come in handy sort of as a safety net if an issue were to occur. The blogs were also a major part of the class that I enjoyed because it again provided free flowing thinking on fresh topics and have the or l opportunity for us tob give our opinions and be open with our thoughts. It challenged us to see other points of view which I think is very important in order to grow as an individual. Overall I thought this class was very helpful and hope to have similar interactive experiences in other classes.

  3. I strongly agree with Vincent's opinion about how this course developed my mind, because before attending this course, I never thought about Code of Ethics either. Even though my undergraduate major in China is Sport Journalism, which should quire journalists with strict ethical conduct. During my internships, more of us prefer using common sense as guideline in practice. After learning at class, I have new understandings of ethical issues in my future career, especially the first assignment about Code of Ethics, I think the assignment provides an opportunity for me to better understand and investigate ethical issues in sports.

I also think that this course provides different angles for us to consider and discuss ethical issues in sports. Even though several topics are sensitive and may not have a definitely conclusion, such as religions, homophobia, sexual discrimination and so on, Dr. Spencer still brought them up for us to discuss at class in a proper way. As an Asian in class, to be honest, I do not familiar with every topic or news happened in this country, and some opinions are different from my own, but Dr. Spencer provided assigned readings for me to prepare for the class, I can say I do not feel any embarrassed or uncomfortable feeling when we discuss sensitive ethical issues in sports.
